Drizzly, Figalicious Kinda Day

May 28, 2010

It’s Friday afternoon with the rain lightly falling. Jarah is hanging out for a bit with Dora the Explorer while Mama puts her feet up for a sec with some fresh cut lime and ice water (never underestimate the power of fresh lime). We caught the beginning drizzle on our walk but I think Jarah’s Elmo was getting a bit funky so an impromptu shower was probably overdue.

A few peaceful moments to bang on the keyboard before we head of to Gumnut’s 25 week appointment. The little badger is currently tap dancing on the roof of her (his?) womb. I am feeling a strong girl vibe so we’re either having a female or a very nurturing boy.

We’ve had a baking win this week, nothing fancy but deliciouso!

Figalicious Banana Muffins

1 and 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup plain Malt-o-Meal (not strictly necessary but crunchy!)

1/2 cup sugar

3/4 cup milk

1/4 cup veggie oil

1 egg

1 Tbl baking soda

pinch salt

splash vanilla

1-2 ripe bananas

Fig jam

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400F. Combine all ingredients (except jam) in mixing bowl (I beat mine). Pour into greased muffin tin, stick a dollop of jam on top of each one and bake about 20 min. So good it’s worth burning your fingers on the hot, sticky, oozy goodness fresh outta the oven.

Reading has become an all consuming activity around the house. Mama needs to use the bathroom, Jarah MUST come along and needs to bring light reading. In the bath? Book please? Eating spaghetti, it would be so much nicer to enjoy a lovely story while digesting the puttanesca.

Here some of the favs we read again, and again, and again, and again, and….

Animalia

Elephant Elements

The Runaway Bunny

Magic Beach

Edwina the Emu

Giraffes Can’t Dance

I am hunting for any Richard Scarry and so far Kauai thrifting has turned up nada. If anyone has old copies of his stuff and looking to unload, give me a holla!

We also made a delightful find this morning…normally we go to the beach in the afternoon. Chores, indoor play, baking, walk and nap are for the morning. As is my one coffee, attempt to shower, tooth brushing and other lofty goals. Afternoon is for markets, shopping, playgrounding and beach.

We had a playdate with a new little friend this morning and ended up at Salt Pond Beach Park at 9am. It was so lovely, loooooow tide which made for super easy knee deep swimming behind the lava break wall. Lots of airport action (ultralights, helis, small airplanes) ensured constant dizzying raptures, and tons of wee kiddies ensured some socialization. So much more fun than the heat, drunkies and craziness that can dominate the late afternoon.

To a lovely long weekend and breaking up staid routines!
